Let’s Not Burn Out

Back in May 2013, I was a manager at Google, working on my master's thesis in Human Development, and a mom of a baby and toddler.

On paper, life gave me everything I wanted. The job, the husband, the kids, the education. But in reality, I was struggling. It was terrific, but it was also too much.

I had 37 direct reports with no middle management. My sleep was disrupted every night, if not by children, then by my spinning thoughts. I was in a state of nearly perpetual agitation, trying to be everything to everyone.

I didn't know it then, but I was a perfectionist, a people pleaser, and struggling with massive Impostor Syndrome–even though I didn't know that was a thing.

I was on the edge of burnout.

Why was this life I wanted so much, causing so much stress?

That question drove me to ten years of profound self-discovery and learning to coach others who struggle in similar ways.

I believe life is too short to be burned out from the life you love.

The Align Coaching Classroom starts soon, and the Fall session will focus on everything I struggled with all those years ago.

This upcoming session is for you if:

  • You feel like you can never say “no” to others, leading to exhaustion and resentment.

  • Your sleep is disrupted with ruminating thoughts.

  • Your inner critic is noisy and has you feeling down most of the time.

  • You feel burned out and have fantasies of walking away.

  • Your personal relationships are strained because you are spending so much time with work.

  • Your confidence at work has taken a hit, or maybe you haven't ever felt confident in a professional environment.

  • You often feel like a fraud at work, as if you received your success due to luck, circumstance, and/or charm.

This upcoming session is not for you if you feel like you've got a handle on your stress and are generally feeling good in the workplace.

Future sessions focusing on boundaries, toxic interpersonal dynamics, and communication may be a better fit.

What I remember most from ten years ago was how everything always felt out of whack. I had little time for the things that were most important to me. Life was too unbalanced.

Since then, I have learned that little changes often create the most significant impacts:

  • Learning to tame the inner critic

  • Strategies for improved sleep and interrupting a spinning mind

  • Learning to say 'no' to the urgent things and 'yes' to the important things

  • What confidence actually is, and how to authentically embody it

  • Game plans for when Impostor Syndrome flares up

  • Tools to navigate uncertainty

If you want this in your life, consider signing up for the Align Coaching Classroom. Classes start October 10, and I hope you will join me.
